Baby DIY

EASY DIY Baby Dress Made from a Tank Top

I love sewing hacks. Because I basically stink at sewing. Seriously. I can’t follow a store-bought pattern to save. My. Life. I don’t know why, exactly. I promise I’m a pretty smart person! Just can’t seem to do it.

So this DIY baby dress is right up my alley. It gave me the satisfied feeling of making something for my daughter myself, without the stress of really…you know…making something. You get it.

What you need:

  • a small scoop-neck women’s tank top with stretch
  • lace, ric-rac, or other trim material (optional)
  • thread to match your tank
  • a sewing machine (optional)

I started with this J. Crew tank. It is a cotton/modal/linen blend.

The stretchy material and scoop neck was perfect for this top-knot style because as I tied up the straps, the neckline magically came up accordingly. You may already own a tank you want to repurpose, which was what I did. Or, you can always pick one up from a thrift shop for a few dollars for this project.

There are only three real steps to making this dress, because the slouchy, casual shape of the dress is already there. All you need to do, depending on the size of your little one, is to:

  1. Tie up the straps into knots in order to bring up the straps and neckline to an appropriate length for your girl. You may have to re-tie it a couple times to get the look right. When you get it right, tie it super-tight so it will stay. I double-knotted mine so that it was one fat knot rather than a knot with a loop sticking out of the top, though honestly that was cute too.
  2. Hem the bottom of the top to the length that you want your dress to be. You may not need to do this depending on the size dress you need and the length of your tank top. I did a single-line stitch with my sewing machine to hem the bottom of mine.
  3. Add a decorative trim to the bottom, if you want to! I had some lace my mother had given me a while back and decided to add two rows of it to just the front of my dress. I just did a really quick single-line stitch with my sewing machine to attach it. You could also do this by hand if you need to.

Note: If you use a larger size tank, you may want to take in the sides a little so that it dress fits narrower. Just turn the tank inside out and stitch a line down each side to bring it in a little.

That’s it! Here are some action shots.

You can see the slouchy, comfy fit. I also made a simple little headband out of the leftovers! It’s just tied into a knot on the front.

E-A-S-Y. Please let me know in the comments below if you make a dress like this for your little one!
